Worms at work!

A great way of manufacturing your own really rich soil enhancer is by keeping a wormery . It's really the worms that do the manufacturing - by eating up your household scraps.

By keeping a wormery you are doing your bit for the Planet too, by cutting down on the amount of waste you are having to send to the tip.

I've had my wormery 6 or 7 years now, and the worms have lived through several weather extremes. I take very good care of them. I have a small hand-fork that I still up their bed of compost material with, so as to aerate them. Also I check to see the medium does not turn too acidic. If I look after them well, they look after me! ;D

Sure do! It's not put directly onto plants but dug into the soil.
They also produce a product called "worm tea". In the breaking down process, a lot of fluid is released from the waste. That is collected and is an excellent tonic for any kind of plants.

Can't remember exactly. Probably saw something about them on the telly. I saw them being shown at a Home and Gardens show - so I must have ordered them from there.

It does make a lot of difference. I also make what's called "nettle tea". Nettles are full of iron and other nutrients. I cut down some nettles and put them in a large vat. I cover them with water and leave for about two, three weeks. During that time, the nettles in the water have rotted down and stink to high Heaven, when stirred. The liquid, when strained makes a fabulous tonic for any plants. I have seen it work miracles on my arum lilies, which seem to be greedy feeders. Great for tomatoes too!

Both the worm, and the nettle tea need to be diluted down by a ratio of 1:10 in regular water, before being applied to plants. They are so powerful!
