I've taken to looking at where food comes from in the supermarket. Before I would just reach out and grab some strawberries, blue berries, blackberries or what have you.
Imagine my shock when the word 'Guatemala' caught my eye on the packet of blackberries. Imagine fresh blackberries coming all that distance. Half way round the world - and even from a different hemisphere! Crazy! The blueberries are from Chile! The raspberries are from Egypt! Apples are from France. Pears are from Spain. The leeks are from Holland. Green beans come from Kenya! The list foes on!
I'm not interested in buying produce that has traveled all that distance - much as I would like to eat them.
I walked on further despairing of finding anything that has originated in my country. (Ireland) I know we've had a miserable year weather-wise in 2012, but it can't have been that bad.
I was on the point of giving up, by the time I reached the potato stand. Yes, you have it! The good old spud comes from Ireland! Also the bread is baked daily in the store.
Regarding fruit and berries, I think the frozen stock is home-produced.
I had been thinking of digging out the raspberry canes at the bottom of my garden. They sprawl all over the place and gave me a miserable crop last year. But now I have second thoughts. Better a few raspberries picked in my garden than a ton of same that has come half way around the world!
From now on my diet is going to consist more of bread and potatoes!
Also, I will be persisting with producing my own home-grown veggies, as much as I can.;D
IMO, there's a lot to be said for being able to go out into your back garden and pick a few leaves of Swiss chard for your supper.
