A nice counter-top can make a big difference to a kitchen. Doesn't have to be the most expensive. My choice would be for one that does not stain and can't be burned or cut with a chopping knife. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I treat my counter-top rather badly. It's actually a tiled one that I made myself. It does take quite a bit of abuse, though it is fairly dated by now!
