It's not 100% ideal from the animals' point of view, but I think the zoos do marvelous work as regards educating the public and getting involved with breeding programmes, so that endangered species can be preserved. That was a deep question, Steelbat! ;D
What would your reaction be if, when you were visiting the zoo, you heard that a tiger had just escaped and was on the loose in the grounds?

I'd hope it was a vegetarian & if not that - then I'd hope it didn't like 'fatty' foods!
LOL! I'm sorry, penny! None of that sounds very practical! ;D
What animal would I like to study? H-m-m! All animals are interesting to me. My niece has just earned her doctorate studying bats - which means her being out on her own tramping across fields in the dark, night after night, for three years. I don't think I'd want that. Maybe crickets is what I'd like. They are nice, harmless little creatures that make a nice sound.
What animal are you?

Funny, it arose out of this, which had originally been cropped out of a pic of reflected light from a crystal in my window. It was too loud and "in your face" against the colours in the forum, so I messed around on it in Photobucket, to bring it "down" a bit. The result you see is now my present avatar.
What is your aim, or what guides you, when choosing an avatar?
