Taphephobia Taphophobia- Fear of being buried alive or of cemeteries.
A lot of people fear death, dying, and the thought of being buried under the ground and being eaten by worms. This fear is called Taphephobia or Taphophobia and it is the fear of being buried alive or fear of cemeteries.
This fear could be brought about by stories they have heard in the past about the body decaying and being eaten by worms and other bacteria. Some fear cemeteries because they also fear seeing ghosts and other monsters. This fear could have been brought about by a personal experience being scared in a cemetery, or even just watching horror movies.
Taphephobia also applies to the fear of being enclosed or being buried alive and is true for those who work underground such as miners. They fear the suffocation they know that will happen should they be buried alive.
These people try to avoid going to the cemetery, are scared of watching horror movies, and would sometimes even avoid going to wakes because just seeing a coffin triggers the fears. They will go to great lengths to avoid going underground and they manifest with signs and symptoms of anxiety such as palpitations, shortness of breath, trembling, feeling of running away even when they only think of the things mentioned above.
Treatment includes psychotherapy and medications may be prescribed if symptoms are severe enough.
When my father died, my uncle tried to prevent me seeing him. I pushed past him and went right up to where my father lay in the morgue. I wanted to make sure he was really dead and that he wouldn't be buried alive. When I got to see him I was left in no doubt that he actually had passed away - so I could relax.
Does that mean I have a touch of Taphophobia?
Also, I might add, I have a fear of passing grave-yards in the night. There was one near me which I had to pass once or twice, and each time I did I felt a Spirit sit into the car with me in the passenger seat and stay there until I had driven past. Next time I would take the roundabout route.
Does that mean i have a double dose of Taphophobia?
